As the 8th National Assembly gradually eases out, paving way for the 9th National Assembly, there is to interrogate the achievements of the outgoing National Assembly most especially as some of the current members may not return. adsbygoogle || []).push({}); js">

In an interaction with Hon. Famurewa Israel Ajibola, representing Atakunmosa East, Atakunmosa West and Ilesa East Federal Constituency, i captue some of the achievements of the 8th and 7th National Assembly, challenges and expectations of the incoming 9th National Assembly.

Hon. Famurewa Israel Ajibola, a two-time Member of the House of Assembly who first got the opportunity to represent the people of Atakunmosa East/Atakunmosa West/Ilesha East Federal Constituency in 2011 and following his re-election under the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2015 till date appraised the performance of the 8th Assembly, noting that it’s experiences without mincing words were very tough and at the same time interesting.

Hon. Famurewa stressed that even though he is elected to the House to represent his people, it’s an experience that connects you to people from different backgrounds; religious, ethnic/tribal cum cultural beliefs. This he said, poses a challenge to the Representative in making sure that you are on the same level with your colleagues.

While stressing the above challenges, the Honourable Member admitted that the overall performance of the 8th Assembly was reasonably okay, in terms of sponsoring Bills, Motions and of course Committee’s engagements which is one aspect of Legislation that is more tedious than the House Plenaries.

Hon. Famurewa used the opportunity to thank God for the opportunity to serve and the enablement to have impacted on his Constituents in the areas of Education, Empowerment, Infrastructure and most importantly, being able at his own time of service to influence a Federal Government project under National Power Technology Agency to be established in his constituency, as a member of House Committee on Science and Technology.

He stated in his words that he has provided the Agency a temporal site to enable them take off by 1st June, and hope to finalize with the state ministry of Agriculture to release land for the permanent site.

Expressing his joy, Hon. Famurewa said; “I am very happy that my people will live to remember that at a particular time, they had a Legislature that influenced that Agency in that Community. This will be my Parting Gift”.

Speaking on the areas of work yet to be done, he advised the Incoming Member taking over from him to be “Calm, be Focused and take the interest of the Constituency above his personal interest”. He also appealed to the Members of the 9th Assembly especially the APC Members, to listen to the Party Leadership and Party Supremacy. He added that they should take the interest of the Party above personal interest. And as they play the game according to party’s tone, God will help them and they will not regret it.

Yahaya’s election, secured with an overwhelming 436 votes during the 8th Delegates Conference in Owerri, Imo State, is a testament to the confidence reposed in him by journalists across the country.

In a statement signed by the National President of the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) Malam Abdulrahman Aliagan, Friday in Abuja and made available to Journalists stated that, “As a seasoned professional who has served as NUJ Gombe State Chairman, Vice Chairman of the North-East zone, and most recently as National Deputy President, the NGIJ believes Comrade Yahaya is well-equipped to steer the union towards greater achievements.”

While celebrating this milestone, “the NGIJ calls on the new NUJ leadership to make the protection of press freedom its utmost priority. The union must boldly stand against the increasing gagging of journalists in Nigeria, which undermines not only the journalism profession but also the country’s democracy and fundamental human rights.

In this regard, “the NGIJ draws the attention of the new NUJ executive to the troubling case of four journalists currently incarcerated at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for nearly two months over a cyberstalking matter involving the Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) and its Group CEO, Mr. Segun Agbaje.
