COVID-19: Easing Lockdown, Government Dodging Responsibility, Sacrificing Citizen Unnecessary – Workers

The All Workers Convergence expressing has charged the federal Government of shying away from its civic responsibility and sacrificing citizensto death unnecessary,
This is contained in a statement signed by the National Coordinator (AWC), Comrade Andrew Emelieze. adsbygoogle || []).push({}); googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js">
Emelizie said, “The recent position of the Nigerian government on covid-19 that individuals should take personal responsibilities and protect themselves from the corona virus has confirmed our worries that the Nigerian government has abandoned her citizens. We the workers are surprised that when we had low cases of corona virus , the Nigerian government locked up the country but now that the number of infections is increasing ,the same government is giving reasons to ease the lock down even in the face of government’s claim of community spread of the virus.
“Our fear is that government has not done enough to warrant the easing of the lock down and so , such an attempt is hazardous and very inimical to the wellbeing of citizens. In fact, government’s proposal is a death trap.
“We are convinced that government has no genuine reason to ease the stay at home order other the fact that they do want to take responsibilities to adequately make provisions for the citizenry while the lock down last. As a matter of fact , government is trying to dodge her responsibilities and duties to the citizenry.
“We are disturbed that despite the cry by citizens for government to develop a comprehensive stimulus plan to help people stay at home during the lock down of which government never did but would rather propose a two trillion naira stimulus plan for the ”national economy” and the private sector while people are dying of hunger due to the lock down. We therefore demand that government should as a matter of priority equally give same amount given as stimulus for the economy to the vulnerable in our society.
“At this trying period nothing can be more important than to safeguard lives. For sure every other activities will pick up later. Unfortunately, our own government is concerned about stimulus plans for private business while ordinary palliative eludes the majority of vulnerables in our society.
“What our government is trying to do is risky and very dangerous, we therefore plead with them not to sacrifice Nigerians unnecessarily. We urge government to take responsibility as done by other government and take care of the economic well being of citizenry during the lock down.
“We are asking that where on earth is our foreign and food reserves?
“We urge government to pull from the foreign reserve and develop a stimulus plan ro enable people stay at home while the lock down last.
“We the Nigerian workers condemn in strong terms the intervention of the world bank and the IMF to devalue our national currency.
“We reject also the attempt by government to implement the Steve Oronsanye report which is basically aimed at reducing the work force in the public service.
“We therefore call on government to rethink her decision on easing off the lock down in order to avert a disastrous situation as earlier predicted. We believe that government is ill advised and that they have acted in error. It is our prayers that we don’t have a surge in corona virus spread within this period else we will hold the government accountable.”, he concluded
